2020 is a hell of a year and that’s an understatement. When Kobe Bryant died the world stopped for 24 hours. Pop Smoke was gone less than a month later. In pop culture, those are two huge blows for fans. Recently, it’s been nothing but chaos, and today, November 6, Chicago’s King Von was shot & killed. He was only 26 years old. From a fan’s perspective, this is another terrible loss for the culture, and one can’t even imagine what’s going through the minds of the people close to him.
Von was only scratching the surface musically. He wasn’t yet on the same level as the other Chicago rappers such as G Herbo, Chief Keef, and Lil Durk. However, he was clearly on his way. His 2018 track “Crazy Story” blew up this year, and it really exposed him to a much larger fan base rather than one that was just local.
Von used the momentum from the success of his breakout single to release his debut album, Welcome to O’Block, which released just a week ago from today. The album featured artists from his city including Lil Durk, Dreezy, and Polo G. It also featured New York’s Fivio Foreign, who was building musical chemistry with Von. The two were last seen shooting a music video, so expect to see that out soon.
This is a tough loss. Another black artist who’s life was taken before we could see them reach their full potential. Long live King Von, and stream Welcome to O’Block.
