The Just Me & You Tour with Tony! Toni! Tone! was a concert of a lifetime, marking a long-awaited and overdue reunion of the iconic trio, Raphael Saadiq, D’Wayne Wiggins, and Timothy Christian Riley, after a 25-year hiatus. The night was a testament to the enduring magic of their music, filled with nostalgia and remarkable performances.

The event began with a DJ playing classic “Old School” hits, immediately transporting the audience back in time as they eagerly awaited the main act. The crowd was on their feet, dancing and swaying to the music, creating an electric and positive atmosphere.

Tony! Toni! Tone! made a grand entrance with an introductory video montage featuring black history moments in pop culture that had shaped their music over the years. They masterfully genre-hopped from New Jack Swing to Neo-Soul, R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop, and Pop, breaking down musical boundaries and showcasing their prowess as seasoned professionals. Their performance included experimental sounds of the time and delivered timeless classics that not only made you want to groove but also filled your heart with joy. Their music was characterized by layered tracks, and their multifaceted artistry allowed them to explore their entire catalog, taking the audience on a nostalgic journey. The absence of phones in the audience allowed everyone to be fully present, free from distractions.

During D’Wayne Wiggins’ solo segment, the guitarist added a tranquil vibe by having incense burning from his guitar. He not only performed his hits, including the soulful “Whatever U Want” and the melodic “Flower,” but also interacted with the crowd by holding the hands of women and serenading them, creating an intimate connection with the audience.

Raphael Saadiq, an East Oakland native and a highly decorated musician, producer, writer, and composer, took the stage in the middle of the group’s set. As a living legend and musical genius with over 30 years in the music industry, he shared personal stories about his upbringing and the profound inspiration he drew from artists like Al Green. The opportunity to delve into the deep catalog of songs he had helped produce for renowned artists such as Beyoncé, D’Angelo, Lucy Pearl, Solange, Erykah Badu, and Bilal was a highlight of the evening.

A 10-minute intermission during the show featured interviews with the band and backup singers, who expressed their deep honor and the inspiration they drew from working with the artists they had admired while growing up. This intermission added a touching and personal dimension to the concert, highlighting the generational impact of these iconic musicians.

The group returned to the stage with a setlist that included cherished songs like “Anniversary,” “Feels Good,” “Lay Your Head on My Pillow,” “It Never Rains in Southern California,” “If I Had No Loot,” and “Little Walter.” The stage was visually enhanced with colorful stairs that separated the levels for the backup singers and the band, adding a dynamic element to the performance. Raphael Saadiq’s voice remained as pure and captivating as ever, and the band’s effortless stage presence and meticulous attention to instrumentation solidified their status as true performers.

The Just Me & You Tour was an extraordinary night of music, nostalgia, and a deep connection between the artists and their dedicated fans. It left the audience with unforgettable memories and a profound appreciation for the timeless legacy of Tony! Toni! Tone! This historical performance was nothing short of a blessing to witness.
