Los Angeles musician Hard2Care is back with a brand new single “Nicotine”, setting the tone for his upcoming project. As an artist, he’s extremely versatile.
His ability to seamlessly transition from 808s trap music that would match the energy of Atlanta’s Hip Hop scene to harmonizing over acoustic production similar to that of the late XXXtentacion is impressive.
As a human he’s an open book, listening to songs such as “805” and “Can’t Sleep Interlude” he really digs deep into what he’s going through personally as someone in their early twenties. We talk about the new single, upcoming work, how the LA lifestyle has affected him and much more!
First question I want to ask is what made you gravitate towards that beat and production (on “Nicotine)? It’s a unique sounding song in your discography.
One my producers sent the beat right as I was getting to the studio. I played it in the car right before I walked in. The energy from that shit was just radiating into my body like I was on molly or something. And I never taken molly so that should tell you something about this beat.
What was the inspiration behind the aesthetic of the video along with the content of the song?
I wanted the video to feel like a short film. I directed the whole thing. Each video I drop is a chapter. I want people to take it in and interpret it in their own way. And (as far as) the content I don’t know, I was just high and saying how I was feeling.
Would you say your approach to making music in general is more feeling based versus having a calculated or structured approach?
Perfect combo, mostly feeling though.
In “Nicotine” you really describe many of the preconceptions of artist life in LA: women, vices, and the fast life. Is that an accurate depiction of this stage of your life right now?
It’s getting dark out here
And how do you feel about that?
I love it . I know it’s not healthy though. I hate these bitches.
Well sonically is this the direction you’re going for your next project? And what has changed since you put out “No Genre”?
No the next project still gonna have no genre. I just put this song out cuz I thought it sounded good musically. My whole life is different I got more money, I take more drugs, and I seem to love people more than I love myself right now unfortunately. No the next project still gonna have no genre. Do you have an idea of when you’re going to be putting this next piece of art out to the world? And let’s talk about that last sentence. You feel like you’re giving more love than you’re receiving. Has that affect your art in any way having these type of emotions present?
I’m dropping again very soon fasho. Everything I feel has an affect on everything I do so yea. Niggas don’t care a lot of the time until I care too much
Explain that last sentence further
I take things for granted too often.
Do you think that’ll ever change?
Yeah, this time it’s going to change, but who knows honestly
True. Do you think the focus you’ve put on your career has slowed your development as a person? As far as no taking things for granted etc.?
Yeah probably. It’s harder for me to grow in other areas if all I think about is one thing all the time.
Right. Well is there anything else you wanted to say or add?
Don’t fall in love and don’t take drugs!
